Comfort Food

Why is food so healing—comforting?

There are many answers to that question. The obvious one is that we can’t live without food.

But the more elusive ways that it is therapeutic is how it connects us to our past. It’s delicate; it happens with the aroma. It sneaks up on us and envelops us with a lifetime of warm remembrances. Scents have the power to draw on those memories and send us traveling through time.

The smell of popcorn brings back going to double features as a child. Cookies baking in the morning brings a smile to my face. Sometimes it sneaks up on me. I’ll feel happy without realizing that it is the smell of the chicken roasting in the oven that has brought back the joy of family dinners.

It is subtle, but it is a world of feelings that are drawn upon by the whiff of something warm that jars a recollection and moves us. This is comfort food at its best.

Do you know what smells trigger your memories? And is it as wonderful to taste the food as it is to smell the aromas? What do you think?
